Christiania

The Christiania Freetown was started in 1971, when a group of hippies moved into abandoned military barracks partly in search of a green area for their children to play in.

The group developed an alternative society that, after many twists and turns with changing governments, is today partially self-governing.

About 850 people make Christiania their home and in addition to being engaged in carpentry and other trades, they run a meditation centre, cafes, restaurants and music clubs.

Many of the houses, which were built and decorated by the initial inhabitants, have become attractions in themselves and this unconventional “town” receives so many visitors that guided tours are offered on weekends.
