Havefrue - the Little Mermaid

During 2010 the famous mermaid has travelled to Shanghai for the World Expo! A replica is found at the Tivoli.

No visit to Copenhagen is complete without stopping by the Little Mermaid. Tourists have been visiting this statue in the Copenhagen harbour at Langelinie since 1913.

But from April-October 2010, this demure little statue (1.25 metres high and just 175 kilograms), will be re-located to the Shanghai World Expo.

During that time, visitors will have to settle for a copy of the Little Mermaid in Tivoli Gardens, or a Chinese art installation in her place on the waterfront.

The Little Mermaid honours the fairytale written by Danish author Hans Christian Anderson. It was donated by brewer Carl Jacobsen (son of the founder of Carlsberg brewery) and sculpted by Edvard Eriksen. Eriksen used his wife, Eline Eriksen, as the model, but the statue’s head is modelled after Ellen Price, who danced in a ballet based on the fairytale about a young mermaid willing to give up her life in the sea for the love of a human prince.
